Why is Macon Interesting?

A park preserving the rich history of American Indians in the area, featuring Mississipian era platform mounds.

Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park is one of the Nation's best-kept secrets, with plans to designate it as America's newest National Park. It is known for remarkable mounds that date back thousands of years and was once the homelands of indigenous communities. The park, located in Macon, Georgia, encompasses over 2,000 artifacts and has been a site of human habitation for over 17,000 years. Important initiatives are underway to tell the story of the people and land accurately and respectfully, including a partnership between the Muscogee Nation and local organizations.
